In addition to coating the mixture with brownie mix, I’ve also included melted chocolate with smooth peanut butter. I’m warning you though – once you make and taste this brownie Puppy Chow recipe, there’s no going back, and why would you? It’s ridiculously easy and quick to make and is a favorite among all ages.
TIPS FOR MAKING BROWNIE PUPPY CHOW
- Whenever making puppy chow, ensure that you use a big enough mixing bowl so that you can easily stir the mixture. Something like a 13 quart mixing bowl will do great.
- For the dry brownie mix, I used a box of fudge brownie mix. There are, of course, plenty of brownie mixes that you can choose from. Simply pick your favorite brand of mix that you can source from your local store.
- Many recipes for puppy chow (or muddy buddies) call for vanilla extract. I didn’t feel this addition was necessary in this recipe as the brownie mix provides great flavor as is. If you feel like you would like to add vanilla extract, then 1 teaspoon will be sufficient.
Brownie Puppy Chow
- Pour your box of chex cereal into a large bowl.
- In a microwave safe bowl, begin melting your chocolate. I set my power level to 5 and heat in 30 second increments, stirring each time.
- When my chocolate is about half way melted, I add in the peanut butter to finish melting them together.
- Once your chocolate and peanut butter are melted and smooth, pour it over your rice chex cereal and then mix till they are all coated in the chocolate and peanut butter mixtures
- In a large ziplock bag, pour the brownie mix in.
- In small batches add in the coated cereal and shake. Using a large slotted spoon scoop out the brownie coated cereal and place on a baking sheet. Continue till you have coated all the cereal in brownie mix.
- Allow to cool completely and serve.
- Optional: add in different candies, marshmallows, cereal or any other treats to make each batch unique.
WHAT IS PUPPY CHOW?
- Puppy chow is a sweet and crunchy snack treat with a hint of salt coated in various sweet candies and sugar depending on the specific recipe. It’s great as a party snack, party favor or to simply enjoy at home with the kids!
WHAT CAN BE ADDED TO THIS BROWNIE PUPPY CHOW?
- Classic puppy chow is great as it is but there’s always room for adding your own personal twist. Here are some tasty additions you could include:
Candy of your liking such as M&M’s, Whoppers, Reese’s Pieces or chopped up Hershey bars or Sprinkles of any type.
CAN I REFRIGERATE THIS BROWNIE PUPPY CHOW?
- Yes, you can. You can store this puppy chow in an airtight container in your refrigerator for a few days whether you have leftovers or are planning on making a batch ahead of time.
- You can also store it at room temperature in an airtight container but it will last longer in the refrigerator. Just keep in mind that the longer you store your puppy chow, the greater the chances of the Chex mix becoming less crunchy.
