Rxbars are all-natural energy/protein bars with simple ingredients and a nice balance of macro- and micro-nutrients. At 52 g, the bars provide 200+ calories, 12 g of protein, and 20+ g of carbohydrates, along with trace minerals and electrolytes. They’re slightly chewy but with a pleasant mild sweetness.
In a sea of very shiny and colorful packaging, Rxbar’s mostly dual-color design stands out in the energy bar aisles of grocery stores. The word “simplicity” best represents the US-based brand, from its packaging and marketing message to ingredients and product portfolio.
I’m a fan of Rxbar. Any brand that eliminates all the artificial crap and delivers a tasty product using natural foods is doing something good in my book.
I recently tried their Coconut Chocolate and Peanut Butter Chocolate flavors. Below is our Rxbar review.
Marketing claims
Simple ingredients. The ingredient list is short but packed with nutritious natural foods. Both the individual ingredients and the actual bars are minimally processed with zero artificial additives.
All the different flavors consist of 3-4 main components – egg whites, nuts, and dates, which are highlighted on the front of the package.
Ingredients and nutritional facts – what’s in a Rxbar?
A Rxbar is 52 g and provides 12 g of protein. They are well-rounded bars that also deliver fats, carbohydrates, and a variety of micro-nutrients.
Coconut chocolate: dates, egg whites, almonds, cashews, chocolate, coconut, natural flavors, and sea salt.
Peanut Butter Chocolate: dates, peanuts, egg whites, chocolate, natural flavors, sea salt, and cocoa.
What are the taste and consistency of Rxbar?
Rxbars are on the chewy side of the spectrum but not overly so. However, in colder temperatures, the bars tend to harden a bit (pro-tip: keep the bars closer to your body on cold days. Your body temperature will keep it softer.)
Rxbars also has a milder sweetness compared with many options on the market. If you prefer more of that chocolaty candy bar taste, the flavor of Rxbar might be too bland for you. I, on the other hand, enjoy the natural flavors of real food ingredients.
There is one notable point. It’s neither a pro nor a con.
Over the years, I’ve had about half of the flavors by Rxbar. In my opinion, they all taste somewhat similar. I may be unable to tell them apart in a blind taste test, which is not necessarily a disadvantage.
The good: it means I always know what I’m getting from a Rxbar regardless of the flavor.
The bad: sometimes, I do want a slight change of pace, especially during long and challenging adventures when taste fatigue is likely.
Both the Coconut Chocolate and Peanut Butter Chocolate flavors are delicious. I found myself wanting to eat both back-to-back, but I did exercise self-restraint, lol.
I especially liked the little peanut chunks in Peanut Butter Chocolate.
I’m usually not a fan of coconut-flavored snacks, but Coconut Chocolate isn’t too “coconutty.” It was still an enjoyable bar.
Is Rxbar packaging convenient?
I love the simplistic design with just 2-3 colors—no fancy graphics. Just the key selling points clearly illustrated. And I’m definitely not alone in thinking the “No B.S.” catchphrase is brilliant.
Regarding practicality, Rxbars’s packaging is standard for a 200+ calories energy snack. Easy to carry and easy to rip open.
When should you eat Rxbar?
Rxbar is tasty and “healthy” enough to be suitable for any occasion.
With 12 g of protein, Rxbars are technically protein bars. There is a reason why the brand first gained popularity in the Crossfit market segment. However, with plenty of carbohydrates and filling real foods, they’re great for long hikes and ultramarathon efforts also.
I’m a big fan of Rxbar’s flavors, which make them a great afternoon pick-me-up snack. When I don’t have time to eat before a morning workout, Rxbar is an excellent pre-workout fuel.
Conclusion
Rxbars are all-natural energy/protein bars with straightforward ingredients yet still deliver a nice balance of macro- and micro-nutrients. At 52 g, the bars provide 200+ calories, 12 g of protein, and 20+ g of carbohydrates, along with trace minerals and electrolytes.
They’re slightly chewy but with a mild, pleasant sweetness. With their great taste and natural ingredients, Rxbars are suitable for pre-, mid-, and post-exercise and as an everyday snack or a convenient meal replacement.
Coconut Chocolate and Peanut Butter Chocolate have similar flavors, but each with a distinct twist. The former has a mild coconut flavor that doesn’t overwhelm the rest of the ingredients. The latter has little peanut butter chunks that give the bar a fun texture.
Whether you need a healthy snack or energy-packed sports fuel, we are comfortable recommending Rxbar.
