What are you looking forward to at Christmas this year?
What gets you most excited – seeing family and friends, the fun of festivities, the sparkle and glitter of decorations, presents or seasonal, Christmas food?
If we are able to continue as we have so far, these last few months, we should be able to spend Christmas with our family and friends, which was so sadly missed last year.
The joy of sharing seasonal food is something that most of us will be able to celebrate, as long as shortages don’t hit the shops.
However, for people with food allergies and intolerances, Christmas can be a bit of a nightmare. When most of us are looking forward to the traditional treats, these are exactly the foods that can cause anxiety.
Nuts are a very traditional, seasonal food and also one of the most common food allergies. One in fifty children in the UK are affected by nut allergies, and this has been increasing over the last few decades.
To get through Christmas feeling safe when you are entertaining, or when you are visiting other houses to eat, or eating out at restaurants, why not compile a wish list of what you can eat and can’t eat, and some helpful suggestions to keep you safe.
Don’t forget to add seasonal alcoholic drinks to the list, because they are often flavoured with ingredients, they may be things that can cause you to have an allergic reaction eg. Gin which is often distilled with nuts.
Type them out, so when you are invited to eat at friends’ houses, you can send them information in advance, and they can talk to you and ask any questions.
Eat-safe Christmas Wish List:
Some of these would make good suggestions for Christmas edible presents…
- Include a list of alternative foods available to replace those you can’t eat, and places where you can buy them.
- Include the seasonal alcoholic drinks that you can drink.
- Point out the importance of eliminating cross-contamination. Explain how during both preparation and serving, different utensils are required – for exclusive use for that food. A personal set of cutlery and condiments to take along to parties would be a good idea.
- Have some colourful mugs or paper cups with your name written boldly, so you can take out with you, to make sure people recognise them as yours, and only yours. This would make a great present…
- A funky bag where you can carry your mug/cutlery etc, so they are out of sight until needed, plus they could carry your supply of epi-pens.
